Reflections
This short poem about gratitude begins with a simple statement: The world is still a beautiful place. The poet is the witness—I see it with my eyes. Yet even as he affirms beauty, he acknowledges the presence of cruelty and lies. The contrast between the world’s beauty and its harsh realities creates a tension the poet seeks to resolve.
The rest of the poem works toward this resolution. The sun will wash the darkness / From indifferent skies suggests that nature continues its rhythm no matter what we human beings do. This idea is both comforting and unsettling—comforting because time moves forward and light returns even after the darkest night; unsettling because nature remains indifferent to our existence.
Despite these contradictions, the poet chooses gratitude. Each morning, he wakes and gives thanks simply to be alive and part of this imperfect world. He returns to his belief that the world is beautiful despite everything. Gratitude, he suggests, is one of the surest paths toward both happiness and wisdom.
Affirmation
I choose to see the world as beautiful. Even in the presence of cruelty or lies, I remain grateful for each new day. Gratitude helps me rise above the harshness of reality and find peace.
